The purpose for disability services is to “level the playing field” to eliminate barriers and discrimination against persons with disabilities and protect student confidentiality.
By law, a person with a disability includes “any person who has a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activity and has a record as having such an impairment.”
Disability services include limited vision, blind, deaf, hard of hearing, learning disability (dyslexia, IEP in high school, ADD/HD, etc.), speech disability, mobility disability, chemical dependency, mental impairment (depression, anxiety, etc.), chronic and systemic illness (AIDS, Arthritis, Cancer, Multiple sclerosis, Diabetes, Muscular dystrophy, Psychiatric disabilities), epilepsy, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury.
It is the student’s responsibility to request disability services. These services are available with the necessary documentation from within the last three years. Documentation must be from the original sources of diagnosis.
Make sure to contact the Director of Disability Services at the beginning of each semester so that your accommodations and other needs can be anticipated.
