Two Hours Before Dawn

No moon.

Stars are pinholes

in a purple velvet dome.

Black trees , twice as tall

as the pole barn lightning rod

loom like sentinels,

their leaves all fallen.

The Great Horned Owl two-hoos

still. He should be through

with his wooing by now. The crow

able to see in the dark,

grinds his warning to a mouse.

A lone duck chuckles at a fish jump.
