Student loans can be an important source of funds to a college student. Different loans have different requirements and benefits.
StudentLoans.gov -- This site is a student's source for information from the U.S. Department of Education and details how to manage student loans.
Direct Loans for Students
Direct Student Loans are either subsidized or unsubsidized. A student may receive a subsidized loan and an unsubsidized loan for the same enrollment period. Once the student's financial aid application is complete, a student will receive a financial aid award letter. The award letter will show a student his or her direct loan eligibility.
Two steps to apply for federal direct loans:
1. Go to StudentLoans.gov.
A. Complete Direct Student Loan entrance counseling.
-- By completing this session, borrowers will understand their rights and responsibilities.
B. Complete the Master Promissory Note.
-- An electronic MPN can be completed in 9 steps.
2. Complete the Direct Student Loan Request.
Exit Counseling
Complete Direct Loan Exit Counseling. This is required for borrowers who have dropped below six credits or will be graduating. By completing this session, borrowers will gain a better understanding of the Direct Loan repayment process.
