Emergency Medical Technician - Basic

Emergency Medical Technicians provide a foundation in emergency medical care. The course is designed to teach emergency care and transportation of patients who access the emergency medical system. Students will develop skills in the use of and care of all basic emergency equipment. The course includes topics such as patient assessment, trauma management, recognition and care of heart disease, respiratory problems and other medical emergencies. Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found in emergency care settings. This course consists of lecture, skills practice and clinical experience at a local hospital and/or ambulance service. This course is approved by the Minnesota Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board. Participants who successfully complete the course will be eligible to take the National Registry of EMT's practical and written examinations for State and National Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. Notice: If you have been arrested, charged or convicted of any criminal offense, you should investigate the impact that the arrest, charge or conviction may have on your chances of employment in the field you intend to study or on your chances to obtain federal, state, and other higher education financial aid.

For the clinical experience portion of this class students will be required to complete the MDH background study and provide proof of a current Mantoux test.

High Speed internet is required for outside of class study.   Students will get all of their base material online along with podcasts as part of the lecture series, PowerPoint and other learning materials.

Emergency Medical Technician - Refresher

This course is designed to enhance, review, and introduce new skills to the current certified Emergency Medical Technician "EMT". With passing of written and practical tests along with either state or national continuing education requirements, students will receive their new 2-year state or national registry certification.

Prerequisite: You must provide proof of a current Healthcare Provider CPR card prior to course completion, plus your Minnesota EMT number and expiration date.

Health Care Provider CPR/AED Initial

The AHA Healthcare Provider Course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide adult and pediatric CPR (including 2 rescuer scenarios), use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. Certification is valid for 2 years (1 year for HCP). PTC teaches according to the latest (2010) guidelines. This course is best for healthcare providers such as physicians, nurses, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, dentists and dental assistants, physicians’ assistants, medical or nursing students in training, aides, medical or nursing assistants, police officers, phlebotomists and other allied health personnel.

Health Care Provider CPR/AED Refresher

This American Heart Association course is designed to re-certify individuals in professional rescuer adult, child and infant CPR.  Cost includes an American Heart card. Prerequisite: Must show instructor current HCP CPR card when you come to class.

Choose only one date.

Pediatric CPR & First Aid

In addition to the basic techniques of CPR and AED, the AHA Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid teaches the participants to manage illness and injuries in a child in the first few minutes until professional help arrives. Topics include: First Aid Basics, Medical Emergencies, Injury Emergencies, and Environmental Emergencies. Intended Audience: For those involved in child care such as parents, child care workers, teachers, camp counselors, youth organizations and coaches for children's sports organizations, other guardians and those who need or want to learn CPR, how to operate an AED, and Pediatric First Aid.

Heartsaver First Aid

The AHA Heartsaver First Aid teaches the participants to deal with injuries seen more frequently. This First Aid course teaches the lay person to recognize and react to situations such as choking, low blood sugar, bleeding, broken bones and sprains, seizures, strokes, insect bites and stings, and temperature related injuries. This course provides the class participant with an AHA 2-year certification for Heartsaver First Aid. (CPR and First Aid content meets the 2010 CPR and ECC Guidelines.)

Intended Audience: Responders like personal trainers, teachers, parents, lifeguards, corporate employees, and individuals who need or want to learn First Aid.

Heartsaver CPR/AED

The AHA Heartsaver CPR and AED teaches the basic techniques of adult/child/infant CPR and use of an AED. Students also learn to use barrier devices in CPR and give first aid for choking for adult, child and infant victims. This course provides the class participant with a 2-year certification for Heartsaver CPR. Cost includes an American Heart (AHA) card. Intended Audience: Responders like security personnel, teachers, parents, lifeguards, airline personnel, family members of patients at high risk for sudden cardiac death, and those who need or want to learn CPR and how to operate an AED. Ideal for workplace training where having trained lay responders may prove invaluable for the safety of customers as well as employees. (CPR and First Aid content meets the 2010 CPR and ECC Guidelines.)

Basic Life Support Instructor (BLS-I & BLS-R )

The American Heart Association Initial and Refresher CPR Instructor Course is a two day course. Day one will be completed at home using the AHA Online course and AHA’s Instructor Manual. This program covers information on teaching and will take most of the day to complete. Once completed you will print out a completion certificate.  Day two will be held Pine Technical College and will cover information such as course organization, policies of AHA administration of a course, equipment cleaning, changes in CPR and why they occur, skills testing, a written test and more.  

INITIAL COURSE:
Provided in the course fee for the Initial participant is the course manual and the online AHA BLS Instructor Essentials.   The Initial student must bring to class the AHA course completion certificate and a current CPR for the Healthcare Provider card.  Upon successful completion, Initial course participants will be awarded a BLS Instructor certification number from the MnSCU-MRTC.  Additional costs for this course are a $25 membership fee to MnScu-Multi Regional Training Center (MRTC).  Course Date:  June 7, 2014   Time:         9-4 p.m.   Course Fee: $250.00

REFRESHER COURSE:
The BLS Instructor Refresher student will access their AHA account and go to the course catalog tab on the onlineaha.org website.   Under the course catalog tab is the BLS Instructor Essentials online portion of the instructor course. The cost for the online course is $30 payable to AHA.  The refresher participant will use their instructor manual in conjunction with the online course.  Print out a completion certificate and bring to class along with your American Heart Association BLS
Instructor card and a current AHA CPR for the HCP card.  Day two will cover AHA instructor guidelines, including a mini lecture topic.  Course Date:  June 7, 2014   Time:   9-4 p.m.  Course Fee: $95.00

Emergency Medical Responder Initial & Refresher (Formerly First Responder)

Emergency Medical Responder course provides instruction in emergency medical care for those who are first on the scene of an accident or medical emergency; intended for police officers, firefighters, and other public safety personnel. Includes patient assessment, CPR, airway management including oxygen, adjunct airways and other resuscitation equipment, medical emergencies including seizures, strokes, heart attacks, poisonings and cover trauma management as well as bandaging, splinting and spinal immobilization. Students will be certified upon completion through the Minnesota Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board.

Nursing Assistant Test-Out

The Nursing Assistant Competency Exam is offered to qualified candidates seeking placement on the MN Department of Health Registry, as required for employment in most nursing homes. State and federal laws require that most candidates for testing have completed a MN state-approved Nursing Assistant training program of 75 hours or more. The competency exam includes a written portion and a hands-on demonstration of nursing assistant skills and abilities. Pre-registration and payment are required. NO WALK INS ACCEPTED.

Home Health Aide

Home Health Aide is an additional 15 hour training intended to prepare students to work as home health aide/homemaker for agencies providing home care. Prerequisite: Must have completed a state-approved 75 hours or more nursing assistant course.

Healthcare Provider (HCP) CPR/AED & Heartsaver First Aid/CPR – Online Refresher Skills Exam Available

The online Heartsaver First Aid/CPR and HCP First Aid/CPR Renewal Courses provide a review for individuals who have prior CPR training. This program recognizes that individuals have knowledge and skills acquired from prior CPR training and/or years of patient care. For the 3-hour online course go to www.americanheart.org/cpr. Once you have completed the online course call to schedule a skills exam for $75.00 at Pine Technical College.

Documentation of completion of the on-line course must be presented at the beginning of the skills exam. Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded either a Heartsaver CPR card or a HCP CPR card, whichever they need.    Prerequisite: Current Heartsaver First Aid/CPR card or a  current Healthcare Provider card with training in the updated AHA Guidelines.
